Fitness influencer Khiana Smith says she is fighting a serious infection in a Bali hospital, where she has spent more than a week bedridden and part of that time in intensive care. Smith, an Australian fitness creator and online coach, has been diagnosed with bacterial meningitis, according to PerthNow. UNILAD reported on her hospitalization.

Smith has also developed pneumonia and fluid on her lungs. She has been unable to fly home to Australia because of the brain infection and concerns about cabin pressure, leaving her hospitalized in Indonesia while her condition is treated.

Fitness Influencer Fighting Bacterial Meningitis

Smith has shared updates with TikTok followers from the hospital. In one video, she described the sudden change from traveling to being confined to an intensive care unit in Bali with a brain infection that she said could have killed her.

“Life is so precious, one minute I’m healthy travelling the world, living my dream life and the next I’m bed bound in ICU in Bali with a brain infection that could have killed me.”

She said the illness affected her memory and that she was struggling to remember things. Smith also described the language barrier as difficult while trying to understand her condition and care far from home.

“I feel absolutely helpless and I just wanna go home,” Smith said. She added that she felt her life was in other people’s hands without proper answers, while also saying the people treating her were doing their best.

Symptoms Escalated Quickly

Smith said her ordeal began when she woke with what she called “the worst headache” and could not get out of bed. Her symptoms progressed to extreme head pain, dizziness, slurred speech, blurred vision and severe sensitivity to light.

An IV drip at her villa did not ease the symptoms. A doctor who assessed her called an ambulance urgently. Looking back, Smith said she had underestimated how serious the situation was and did not know what had happened or how she contracted the infection.

The source describes bacterial meningitis as an infection that inflames the protective membranes around the brain and spinal cord. It reports that the illness can become life-threatening without urgent treatment. Smith’s own account emphasizes how quickly she went from feeling healthy while traveling to requiring intensive hospital care.

A Small Improvement, With Travel Still Unresolved

Smith later shared a modest improvement: after more than a week, she felt slightly better after getting out of bed and walking for the first time. The update did not include a timetable for leaving the hospital or returning to Australia.

Followers have sent messages of support and asked whether she could be brought home. One commenter said an Australian hospital might be easier for her mentally, while another person who had recently spent a week in hospital offered encouragement.

Smith said she has long taken her health seriously by eating well and exercising regularly. Her account of becoming critically ill despite those habits led her to urge followers not to take their lives or health for granted. For now, her stated wish to return home remains constrained by the infection and the medical concerns about flying.
